Aya is the first patient sponsored by "Patrons of the Hearts". She is a 6 month old baby girl from Morocco with a ventricular septal defect (large hole between the pumping chambers of the heart) diagnosed at 3 months of age. She had an unsuccessful heart operation in Morocco to help control her heart failure and remained in congestive heart failure with very poor growth and weight gain. Upon arrival to Jacksonville her size and weight were that of a newborn baby. Ultrasound evaluation of her heart demonstrated a more complex problem than was initially diagnosed in Morocco, one for which she will need 2 more operations. Aya underwent heart surgery by Robert Dabal MD at Wolfson Children's Hospital on April 17 with a great result. She was transferred out of the intensive care unit within 3 days of surgery and was discharged from the hospital within one week of her operation. Aya will return to Jacksonville sponsored by "Patrons of the Hearts" for her final heart surgery when she is 3 years old. |
