Florence is a 3 year old girl from Zimbabwe. She has a complex form of congenital heart disease with only one functional pumping chamber. In addition she had markedly decreased blood flow to the lungs with severe underdevelopment of the arteries within the lungs. As a result of this the amount of oxygen in her blood was very low.  In order to improve her oxygenation she underwent surgical placement of a small tube graft between the main vessel to the body and the vessels to the lungs. She had significant improvement though she will need to return for more heart surgery in a year.
